At Vanessa K, the selection of leathers is not a formality—it is a foundational act, the first link in a chain of uncompromising standards that results in pieces designed to last. Here is how we choose our materials, why it matters, and what that tangibly changes for you.
1. It all starts with the choice of leather
Even before thinking about a bag's shape, its finishes, or its colors, Vanessa starts with an essential question: which leather? This choice determines everything else—the texture, the feel, the durability over time, the way the bag will age and develop its patina.
Natural leather comes in a multitude of qualities and finishes, each with its own characteristics. At Vanessa K, we work exclusively with premium leathers, selected from French and European tanneries recognized for their expertise and responsible practices.
We do not work with bonded leather, faux leather, or PU leather — only natural, traceable, top-quality leather.

4. Our selection requirement: the criteria that are not negotiable
At Vanessa K, every leather used meets a strict set of criteria before entering our workshop. These criteria are non-negotiable—they are the foundation of our quality promise.
- Traceable origin: we know where every skin comes from and select European tanneries with transparent practices.
- First-cut quality: we only use top-choice hides, with no major flaws or excessive correction.
- Quality dye: the colors are achieved with penetrating and solid dyes that do not transfer and resist time.
- Wear resistance: each leather is evaluated for its durability against daily stresses—friction, repeated flexing, and light exposure to moisture.
- Model consistency: the leather must match perfectly with the silhouette and purpose of the bag for which it is chosen.
We test every new leather on prototypes before starting production. Only those that pass this test make it into our collections.
5. Leather and sustainability: our responsible commitment
The question of sustainability in fashion is central. At Vanessa K, our answer is simple: create less, create better. By choosing premium natural leathers, we design bags that last—and therefore don't end up prematurely in the trash.
